Azar Nafisi’s perceptive is about empathy. Empathy is the ability to identify with and understand somebody else’s feelings or difficulties (Encarta Dictionary). Nafisi’s perceptive of empathy is that every person have their own connection to the world, the society, and the culture. Every person have their own culture so they have to be presented paralleled to the culture. All of us wanted to be different but we are trapped in the illusion of the society’s ideal world. But, we do have our own kind of lens to see our new alternative world, only we are stuck because we may be afraid or embarrassed to show that we are different than others because the society may reject us. The public may tell us that showing something different than others is a offense, but in your heart, it is not a offense, it is just show who you are. Also Nafisi want to argue how different between your feelings if you will be in your “own” world- imagination or in the “real- equivalent” world.
This argument by Nafisi is kind of emotion argument and character and value argument. Emotions, Nafisi believes your own feelings, you should follow your heart not the head. Your head will do just follow what the civilization think and want. The reasons why you should follow your imagination because it is part of your feelings and you want to be exultant, not with the kind of feeling of “cornered- in.” For a example from Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Huck met Jim, a black slave from south and Huck supposed not to be hanging out with him because one of Huck’s Sunday school sermons, being with a slave will send him to hell because it is a sin. But Huck followed his heart because he wanted to have that fun relationship with Jim like a-floating, talking, singing, and laughing.
Nafisi’s perceptive with this kind of argument- Character and Values. Nafisi believes that if you follow your desires and society will treat you differently. The society is wrong because the world should to believe everybody is different. And everybody can show each of their own worlds to others and others may learn from other too. The people in the civilization have to keep their character and values by follow the same people, reality, and the culture. One incident in Dafur, West Sudan, one woman decided to follow her feelings by dressing her own style to show who she was. At the result, she was executed by the country’s authority. She died by showing her own imagination. Nafisi believes that we can break from it and the public will change and follow every person’s own unique approach to the world. But by breaking from it may be so dangerous including deaths, but at the end every of us will be relieved. Which every person can create their own identity- character, and they can create their own values- what they really wanted.

So far, no one has characterized Nafisi's arguement to be about character but you did and you applied it to character well.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to be clear on the part where you said, "But by breaking from it may be so dangerous including deaths, but at the end every of us will be relieved." Did you mean that most people would be relieved when a person get punished for being different or what?
ReplyDeleteOverall, the blog is really good. :)
I never thought about you applying the story based on character. I didn't think that until I read your blog. It opened my mind to it.
ReplyDeleteVery nice!
I was planning to say something similar to Jessica. I had a hard time understanding what you meant by that sentence.
ReplyDeleteCare to clarify?
"But by breaking from it may be so dangerous including deaths, but at the end every of us will be relieved."
ReplyDeleteWe will be relieved if we remain alive :P
Really impressive, one of strongest messages I have read so far. You are right about the society forcing us to shape ourselves. Just read V for Vendetta when you have the time. We chose to let government to control the society. Why not we control the society by believing it together? We will never be able to do that because of the propaganda and the foolish of our minds, sadly.
ReplyDeleteI don't fear going against what society believes and wants. That's why I'm here at GU as a hearing girl. That's why I believe my lesbian mother is right while all others saying she will burn in hell are wrong. Maybe growing up the way I did, with my mom being the way she is, has kept me from ever feeling the fear everyone else seems to have regarding being an individual. I have no idea. But I wish people were more like me. If they were, the world would be a much happier place. People would go after the goals THEY want to achieve, not the goals everyone else is telling them to go for.
ReplyDeletethis is a good blog :) people need to follow their heart not their heads.
ReplyDeleteIt is cool because it seems that most of us believes that emotion is the argument, but you did character & value also. That was cool. :)
